Ondine Updates

Well Hi there little mermaid.

So sorry I haven’t paid any attention to you for quite some time.

Life is odd. Things have happened. I had a five-month long moment. I think it’s passing now. I’m back to my relatively normal reality.

And with that I’m back to focusing on my beautiful undine and all her sparkling finery.

I’ve finished my first draft of the story. That was really exciting. If anything it’s what brought me back. I’m in love with Ondine all over again, and I can’t wait to pick up my work again. It needs working through, adding bits to, taking bits out… but it’s there. It’s a story. It’s real.

And now I’m back into my beautiful creative bubble, of course, I’ll start filling up this little blog with lots of updates and images of what’s going on too!

To start with… a few sketchbook pages of late.

I’m going back to the beginning almost. Re-familiarising myself with her tale, and her tail. I’ll be at the drawing board for a while, trying to figure out where to go with my collection samples, what to do with my knotty tail ideas, and all the while tailoring her story to it’s finest… and talking it through with a wonderful filmmaker to figure out how to transform her tale into images. If you’re crushing on my project, and have any filmy/acting/music/anything experience, please hit me up!

Ooo and here are a few knotty samples…

All pretty exciting, huh?

Stay tuned for tales, and tails, and pearls of wisdom, and some actual pearls too!

Oh, and I’ll leave you with this oh-so-glorious song from Laura Marling, it’s appropriately titled Undine, and shares a similar thread to my own story.

Hey Laura, fancy writing me a soundtrack for my film?!

First Excerpt from The Story of Ondine

I’ve been so busy these past few weeks writing away. It feels like a giant explosion of words has just melted out from my brain. I’ve not written much of anything but the odd one-liner, blog posts and journal entries for such a long time. I’ve missed it. I really must write more.DSC_0186

I don’t know if it’s any good yet. I’m still in the first draft stages and still need to write a huge chunk of middle bit, but it’s oh such a glorious process.DSCF1080small

If Ondine is as successful as I hope it will be, I’m definitely going to write a story for every single collection I do. Oh joy!!

Anyway….. thought I’d share with you a little sneak peek at part of the story.

She nodded, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“Yes.”

He rummaged around in his pockets and pulled out a strand of white string. She laughed through sparkling watery eyes and held out her hand. He tied the little rope around her finger. She looked down at the string, flexed her fingers, brought them up to her mouth and licked her new ring. He watched in astonishment as the glistening bubbles in her saliva solidified around the knot and the string set in silver.

“Okay, you really have to tell me all your secret now!”

Still a first draft, so it will most likely change! But, what do you think? Would love some advice?!!

Ooo and here are a few more full-scale tail samples. Must write that knitting blog! and maybe a weaving one too!Silver Coned (14) Silver Coned (12) Silver Coned (9) Silver Coned (8) Copper Clawed (1)Copper Clawed (10) Copper Clawed (6) Copper Clawed (4) Copper Clawed (3)And the first pretty page in my sketchbook (will upload some more images of the other pages soon).DSC_0060I’ve also been working on some knot-work for the main elements of the jewellery collection… all will be revealed soon.DSC_0046 DSC_0047 DSC_0059

Introduction to the Past: Thinking of You

A new blog category.

Reflections of the Past.

I thought it might be nice to give you little glimpses into my past life; the artworks and various creative endeavours I have created… the little paths that have led me to this moment.

School projects, long forgotten journal entries, photographs hiding down the back of the sofa, odd paintings I’ve totally forgotten about and all the other bits and pieces of creativity that wants to find a home on the internet… they want to crawl out from underneath my bed and show themselves off to you.

Are you as excited as they are?!

Well, here is number 1.

Thinking of You

This was the start of it all.

I never considered myself into photography until I had taken this photo.

It was just a doodle in sugar. I was out having tea and cake with my grandparents at a local garden centre, and as the moaned about the coming cold weather my mind wandered to my recent love affliction… okay so I had a crush! and instead of writing I love yous in my notebook like a normal person I wrote it in spilled sugar in a garden centre.

There was something quite beautiful about the moment. I tuned out everything around me and all I could see was my reflection in the teapot and his name manifested itself in the sugar… it was a weird moment, so naturally I wanted to document it…. ahhhh blissful crushes!!

All I had back then was a crappy phone camera, but miraculously the photo turned out rather beautifully.

I picked the photography module at school, pinched my Mum’s decent DSLR and have loved snapping away ever since.

New Designers

New Designers = a huge trade show for jewellery graduates to display their final year work, and where people from the industry visit and interact with said graduates.

A rather wonderful experience. Was more than lovely talking to everyone who passed through about my work, you were all so nice :) And I now know how to hand up a display with foam in a really short period of time with limited tools! and how to dress professionally, and how speak to people without wanting to run away! and am more than a little jealous of all the stunning work at the show! so much inspiration in one place.

And a trip to London, so all in all pretty awesome!

My display all set up and pretty… even with concretesque blocks!

Was so hot in there that I didn’t spend too much time inside, but the ceiling was epic so I did take a few wee snaps:

The Little (Dead) Mermaid – Making Of

A few days ago my wonderful 3D printed steel bubble parts arrived (yay!) and today I’m going to show you what I did with them!!

DSCF9491

First thing… a bit of etching! Gotta tape up the holes…

DSCF9510

… and paint the metal with etching fluid.

DSCF9522

One dry, little dead fishy, horrible sea creatures and monstrous imagery are scraped away.

DSCF9083

And etched! with my friend the nitric acid.

DSCF9541

DSCF9606

After a quick clean, the pieces are given a fire to oxidize the metal and give a little bit of tonal colouration.

DSCF9608

DSCF9610

They are then rubbed back using the pendant drill and a little sandpaper.

DSCF9612

DSCF9613

DSCF9619

DSCF9623

Now they’re all shiny and ready for the finishing touches!

DSCF9624

DSCF9625

The beads are strung onto a knitted blue wire chain and strung with a variety of blue beads and pearls.

The studs and ring have cubic zirconia gemstones, wire, and bits of hacked up dinosaurs that have been painted with gloopy varnish pigments (ie. nail polish!) are added into the little pre-printed holes.

DSCF9642

DSCF9643

All the pieces are then finished with little spots of clear varnish. My display for these pieces is going to involve something a little wet…. so when the pieces are submerged the varnish will prevent them from rusting all over, ie. the rust will only appear in certain parts…… or that’s the plan anyway! rusting isn’t really something I’m going to have control over! but that’s the fun of these little dead mermaids :)

Stay tuned for a post with images of the finished pieces and a photoshoot post too!
