Last week my Hairy Legs were featured in Tin Roof’s exhibition Where Our Minds Are Now

Hairy Legs (pinksplatter)

In recognition of International Women’s Day 2016, Tin Roof are delighted to present WHERE OUR MINDS OUR NOW; an exhibition created in response to the theme of Women and Gender Parity.

Exhibiting over 30 artists from a range of different backgrounds, working in a variety of mediums, we have brought together an impressive miscellany of visual approaches to be as inclusive as possible. Consequently, this show is sure to be an exciting and eclectic mix, exploring contemporary interpretations of women in art.

Join us on Friday 4th March at 7pm for the opening night, at which there will be a short talk from local artist and DJCAD lecturer Pernille Spence, on the importance of the presence and representation of women in contemporary art. (She also has work in ‘The Mother Load’ exhibition at The Hannah Maclure Center!)

The usual refreshments will be provided, along with a bake sale to raise funds for Dundee Women’s Aid, so fill those pockets with loose change!

The exhibition will run from the 5th-9th March from 12-5pm

Exhibiting Artists: Ruth Archibald-Swaans, Sue Beveridge, Craig Black, Alana Brown, Andrea Campomanes, Kirsty Dalton, Violet Fraser, Robyn Glendinning, Rosemary Head, Joanna Helfer, Chloe Henderson, Ana Hine, Naya Magaliou, Emma McDowall, Pauline McGee, Siobahn Morison, Eilidh Morris, Drew Mortimore, Shannon Murray, Ciara Neufeldt, Alison Philp, Lucie Rachel, Rosie Roberts, Robyn Scanlan, Sarah Smart, Aylson Stewart, Sylvia Tarvet, Stephanie Vandem, Saara Varady, * VINNIE *, Eilidh Wilson, Nicola Wiltshire

The exhibition seemed to go really well, so I thought I’d share a few of my favourites (photos courtesy of Tin Roof)…..

The Little (Dead) Mermaid – Making Of

A few days ago my wonderful 3D printed steel bubble parts arrived (yay!) and today I’m going to show you what I did with them!!

DSCF9491

First thing… a bit of etching! Gotta tape up the holes…

DSCF9510

… and paint the metal with etching fluid.

DSCF9522

One dry, little dead fishy, horrible sea creatures and monstrous imagery are scraped away.

DSCF9083

And etched! with my friend the nitric acid.

DSCF9541

DSCF9606

After a quick clean, the pieces are given a fire to oxidize the metal and give a little bit of tonal colouration.

DSCF9608

DSCF9610

They are then rubbed back using the pendant drill and a little sandpaper.

DSCF9612

DSCF9613

DSCF9619

DSCF9621

DSCF9623

Now they’re all shiny and ready for the finishing touches!

DSCF9624

DSCF9625

The beads are strung onto a knitted blue wire chain and strung with a variety of blue beads and pearls.

The studs and ring have cubic zirconia gemstones, wire, and bits of hacked up dinosaurs that have been painted with gloopy varnish pigments (ie. nail polish!) are added into the little pre-printed holes.

DSCF9642

DSCF9643

All the pieces are then finished with little spots of clear varnish. My display for these pieces is going to involve something a little wet…. so when the pieces are submerged the varnish will prevent them from rusting all over, ie. the rust will only appear in certain parts…… or that’s the plan anyway! rusting isn’t really something I’m going to have control over! but that’s the fun of these little dead mermaids :)

Stay tuned for a post with images of the finished pieces and a photoshoot post too!

Faery Wings Photoshoot

At night, behind my fluttering eyelids, I see myself flying through forests shadowed in sparkling mist, from my back protrudes great wings. Wings that are different every time. The dream always ends the same: suddenly I fall from my Faerie Queen throne, and I am myself again, wingless.
I have preserved the wings in the land of the living.
Watch as the twirl and spin before your eyes; that’s them dreaming of flight behind closed eyes.
For now, they are solid and stuck into their fine silver forms, stretched with glittering threads and magnificent rainbow glistening opals.
One day they will land back within the braids of their Queen, upon her wrist and wrapped around her ears; then they will fly again.
